Rafa and Nala enjoying Cabo de Gata views

Looking for an escape into untouched nature and pristine beaches, all while avoiding the crowds, right here in Europe? Well, you’re in for a treat! In this post, we’ll dive deep into the heart of Andalusia’s extraordinary natural wonder: Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Iga (very pregnant!) and I, along with our faithful companion, Nala, embarked on this adventure in a rented van. Our mission? To explore the hidden beauty of Spain’s most renowned coastal park. So come along, and join us in experiencing the best of van life in Cabo de Gata.

Cabo de Gata Lighthouse & La Fabriquilla

Our van life journey in Cabo de Gata starts with a scenic drive from the town of the same name to the iconic lighthouse. This route showcases the region’s diverse beauty, transitioning from an expansive, deserted beach to mountain roads lined with breathtaking viewpoints. Each turn opens up new vistas, inviting you to pause to enjoy the stunning panoramas.

Upon reaching the lighthouse, you will be greeted by parking spaces for vans and cars. Right next to the lighthouse, the Mirador del Arrecife de las Sirenas offers a spectacular view of the dramatic coastline and the renowned reefs, making it a perfect spot for memorable photos.

The return trip includes a stop at La Fabriquilla, a good spot for lunch. Enjoying freshly caught fish and traditional paella here isn’t just a meal; it’s a taste of the local culture, adding richness to your experience of van life in Cabo de Gata.

Playa de Los Genoveses

As you continue exploring Cabo de Gata, Playa de Los Genoveses awaits with its tranquil beauty. This beach, known for its unspoiled nature, presents a stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat, offering a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Be aware the road to get there is a bit bumpy but well worth it, and you can find parking easily.

Playa de Monsul

Close to Playa de los Genoveses and next on your van life journey is Playa de Monsu, the best beach in the entire Cabo de Gata some would say. This beach offers a dramatic landscape, with its volcanic rock formations, that captivates photographers and nature lovers alike. It’s been a place of filming location for famous movies, no wonder why! Playa de Monsul is not just a beach; it’s a testament to nature’s artistic prowess, adding a touch of adventure to your van life experience in Cabo de Gata.

Las Negras

In the heart of Cabo de Gata Natural Park lies Las Negras, a serene village that inspires tranquility. Once a fishing village, it has retained its traditional charm with narrow streets and whitewashed houses so popular in Andalucia. The village beach, a mix of pebbles and sand, isn’t great for swimming, but it’s a picturesque spot for photography. For a more scenic beach experience, a short walk to the beach near Camping La Caleta unveils a more secluded and serene setting. Las Negras, with its relaxed atmosphere, is perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat.

La Isleta

Next destination, La Isleta! It is a charming coastal village known for its tranquil atmosphere and stunning natural surroundings. The village is easily accessible, with a very large parking area at the entrance, ideal for cars and vansโ€‹โ€‹. You will see a lot of travelers enjoying the views and sharing meals, pure van life in Cabo de Gata! But please be aware that you cannot spend the night in this public parking, it’s only to be used during the day. If you want to stay overnight, there are a few public parking spots around the town, so no need to look for a camping tonight!

Playa Los Escullos

Playa Los Escullos stands out as a true gem for van lifers exploring Cabo de Gata. For us, it was surprisingly the highlight of the trip, even if we didn’t read so much about it online. This picturesque beach is characterized by its rugged beauty and serene atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat by the sea. The beach’s natural landscape, with its striking rock formations and clear waters, offers a perfect spot for relaxation and nature photography.

For van travelers, Playa Los Escullos offers more than just scenic views; it’s a place where you can park your van and truly immerse yourself in the natural environment. The area provides ample space for parking, allowing you to set up your temporary home right by the beach. Here, you can enjoy the simple pleasures of van life – waking up to the sound of waves, having meals with a sea view, and stargazing at night.

Camping and Van Life in Cabo de Gata

For our van life adventure through Cabo de Gata, we rented a van from vansrepublic. They are located in beautiful Granada, a couple of hours away from Cabo de Gata. Their vans are gorgeous and the owner who runs the business is adorable and very helpful, especially for first-timers like we were! 100% recommended. On top of great travel tips, they also recommended the Park4Night app, which proved invaluable for locating ideal spots for both daytime stops and overnight stays. This app was our go-to guide, helping us discover some fantastic locations to park our van, whether for a few hours of relaxation or a peaceful night’s sleep.

Aside from public parking, we stayed at two campsites that we recommend: WeCamp Cabo de Gata and Camping Los Escullos (10 euros the night!). Both places offered the tranquility and amenities needed to enjoy a good night’s sleep, cook some delicious meals, and recharge our batteries โ€“ both literally and figuratively!

One of the highlights of these campsites was the opportunity to meet and interact with other travelers. And, of course, there was a touch of humor to our stay โ€“ our dog Nala had her moments of fame, particularly with her amusing reactions to some chickens at the campings. It’s these little moments that add a special flavor to the van life experience.

Conclusion

As our journey through Cabo de Gata comes to a close, we’re filled with gratitude for the stunning landscapes and serene moments experienced along the way. From the captivating beaches to the quiet charm of local villages, each spot has left an indelible mark on our hearts. Remember, whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just starting your van life journey, Cabo de Gata offers a wealth of beauty and adventure in a safe environment.
